How Often Should You Change Your Oil?

Most drivers should change their oil somewhere between 3,000 and 7,500 miles. The range is that wide because the answer depends on one thing more than any other: the type of oil in your engine. Conventional oil needs replacing around 3,000 miles. Full synthetic commonly runs 5,000 to 7,500. Your owner's manual sets the outer limit.

That's the short answer. The useful answer takes about three minutes, because "whichever comes first" is doing a lot of quiet work in every oil change recommendation you've ever read and because the interval printed in your manual assumes a kind of driving that most people don't actually do.

The 3,000-mile rule belongs to the 1980s

The 3,000-mile figure is the most repeated number in car maintenance, and for most modern vehicles it's simply too conservative. It comes from an era of looser engine tolerances and primitive mineral oil that broke down quickly under heat. Manufacturers built in a wide safety buffer because they had to.

Two things changed. Engines got tighter and cleaner-running. And oil chemistry improved enormously modern synthetics are engineered to resist thermal breakdown and sludge formation in ways conventional oil never could. Plenty of current vehicles are factory-specified well past 5,000 miles, and some past 10,000.

The flip side is worth saying plainly: none of that helps you if your engine is filled with conventional oil. The interval follows the oil, not the year your car was built.

Whichever number you land on, treat it as a ceiling rather than a target. Oil doesn't fail politely at 5,001 miles, but it does lose additive protection gradually and the last stretch of any interval is the part where it's working hardest.

What your manufacturer actually recommends

Oil type sets the practical floor. Your manufacturer sets the specification you need to meet to keep a warranty intact. Usually these two answers agree. Where they don't, the manual wins.

Broadly, most major automakers now publish intervals in the 5,000 to 10,000-mile range for normal driving on full synthetic a significant shift from the figures printed twenty years ago. Toyota's guidance for many current models sits around 10,000 miles or twelve months on synthetic, dropping to roughly 5,000 to 7,500 under severe use. Ford and GM commonly land in the 7,500 to 10,000-mile band. Several Volkswagen and Audi engines are specified around 10,000. Some Nissan applications stay notably shorter.

Two details matter more than those headline numbers.

Many modern cars don't use a fixed interval at all. Oil life monitoring systems estimate remaining oil life from engine temperature, load, revolutions and trip length, then tell you when to service. If your dashboard reports a percentage, that system is your interval it already knows things a printed table can't.

Almost every manufacturer publishes two schedules: normal and severe. Which one applies to you isn't a matter of preference, and it's where most drivers guess wrong.

Normal or severe? Most drivers are severe

"Severe" sounds like it means racing or off-roading. In manufacturer terms it means something far more ordinary, and a large share of everyday drivers qualify. You're likely on the severe schedule if a fair amount of your driving involves:

  • Short trips under roughly ten miles where the engine never fully warms up
  • Heavy stop-and-go traffic, or extended idling
  • Towing, hauling, or carrying consistently heavy loads
  • Sustained extreme heat or cold, dusty roads, or winter road salt

The short-trip case is the one people underestimate. Oil needs to reach full operating temperature to boil off the moisture and unburned fuel that collect during cold starts. A commute that never gets there leaves that contamination behind, where it slowly turns acidic. Two drivers with identical cars and identical mileage can genuinely need different intervals for this reason alone.

If your driving fits the severe pattern, work from the shorter end of your interval instead of the longer one. A five-mile commute through traffic is harder on oil than a hundred miles of highway.

Time counts even when mileage doesn't

Every interval above reads as mileage or months, whichever comes first and the months half isn't filler. Oil degrades chemically while it sits, oxidising, absorbing moisture and losing additive strength. A car driven 2,000 miles across a year still has oil that's spent twelve months breaking down.

This is why manufacturers generally recommend at least one oil change per year regardless of distance covered. If you're a low-mileage driver, the calendar is your trigger, not the odometer.

Signs you're already overdue

Oil should be changed on schedule, not on symptoms by the time something is noticeable, the oil has usually been past its useful life for a while. Still, act on these right away:

  • Oil on the dipstick that looks dark, gritty or thick instead of translucent amber
  • A ticking or tapping noise from the top of the engine, especially at startup
  • An oil life or oil pressure warning on the dash
  • A burnt smell in the cabin, or a level that keeps dropping between services

One exception to the "don't panic" tone: an oil pressure warning isn't a scheduling prompt. Stop driving and have the vehicle looked at.

Diesel trucks follow different rules

Diesel engines produce soot and run at higher loads and cylinder pressures, so their oil does a harder job. Heavy-duty oils like 15W-40 are built for exactly that, with additive packages designed to neutralise acid and hold soot in suspension.

Intervals vary widely with duty cycle. A diesel pickup used for commuting is a different case from one that tows near capacity or idles for hours on a job site. Published guidance for moderately used diesel pickups commonly falls in the 5,000 to 7,500-mile range, while fleet operators often run longer using oil analysis. If you tow heavily or idle a lot, service earlier rather than later, and follow your engine manufacturer's severe-duty schedule.

Find your interval in under a minute

  1. Check the dashboard. If your car reports oil life as a percentage, that's your answer — service it when prompted.
  2. Open the owner's manual to the maintenance schedule and note both the normal and severe figures.
  3. Confirm which oil your engine takes viscosity plus the specification, often listed as an API or ILSAC rating.
  4. Decide honestly whether your driving is normal or severe, and work from that column.
  5. Log the date and mileage of every change so the next one isn't guesswork.

Using the correct specification matters as much as the timing. The wrong oil can affect fuel economy and, in some cases, warranty coverage so match the manual, not the price tag.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 3,000-mile rule still valid?

 Only for conventional oil. If your engine runs full synthetic, changing at 3,000 miles means discarding oil with real life left in it. Match the interval to the oil type and to your manual.

Does synthetic oil really last twice as long?

 It lasts meaningfully longer, though the exact figure depends on the grade and your engine. Full synthetic typically doubles a conventional interval, and extended-performance formulations go further still. Your manual's maximum is still the ceiling.

I barely drive. Do I still need annual changes?

 Yes. Oil oxidises and absorbs moisture over time regardless of distance, and low-mileage driving is usually short-trip driving, which is harder on oil than highway miles. Change it at least once a year.

Can I switch from conventional to synthetic?

 In almost all cases, yes, and there's nothing special to do during the transition. Confirm your engine's required specification first, then extend your interval to match the new oil.

What happens if I go a bit over? 

A few hundred miles past your interval isn't an emergency. Consistently running thousands of miles over is a different matter it accelerates sludge formation and internal wear in ways that get expensive and permanent.

Should the filter be replaced every time? 

Yes. A saturated filter stops trapping contaminants and can restrict flow, which undoes much of the benefit of fresh oil. A filter change should be part of every oil service.
