How to Find the Exact Oil Your Vehicle Needs
The most reliable source is your owner’s manual, whose maintenance section states the exact viscosity grade, whether synthetic is required, and the service interval, and many engines print the correct viscosity right on the oil-fill cap. That grade is written in a form such as 5W-30, where the number before the “W,” which stands for winter, describes how the oil flows when cold, while the second number describes its thickness at operating temperature. Use the grade your manufacturer specifies rather than a thicker one, because the wrong viscosity can hurt fuel economy and, in some engines, cause damage.
The bottle also carries certifications that prove the oil meets current standards. The current API gasoline category is API SQ, which replaced API SP in March 2025, and the current ILSAC specification is GF-7, which replaced GF-6 and adds stronger protection against low-speed pre-ignition, better timing-chain wear protection, and improved fuel economy.
